Varsinkin näin vaalien alla kauniit korulauseet varhaiskasvatuksen tärkeydestä nousevat monen puolueen suunnalta esiin. Korulauseet eivät kuitenkaan lämmitä päiväkodissa työskenteleviä, jotka elävät erilaisessa todellisuudessa kuin päättäjät. Haluan kertoa teille muutaman tilannekuvan päiväkodin arjesta, joita olen kokenut toimiessani aikaisemmassa ammatissani varhaiskasvatuksen opettajana:
“Olen aamuvuorossa pienten alle kolmevuotiaiden ryhmässä ja saan ilmoituksen, että ryhmään seuraavaksi tuleva lastenhoitaja on kipeänä. Ryhmän kolmas aikuinen tulee vasta tunnin päästä. Kaikki lapset ovat paikalla ja minun pitäisi ruveta jakamaan aamupalaa lapsille. Ryhmän lapsista 2 ei vielä osaa kävellä. Minulla on vain kaksi kättä, jotka eivät ehdi lohduttamaan osaa lapsista, jotka itkevät syöttötuolissa. Myös minua itkettää ja tunnen suurta riittämättömyyden tunnetta.”
“Olen päiväuniaikaan valvomassa isompien 3-5 vuotiaiden lasten unta. Meillä on ryhmästä yksi henkilö pois ja sijaista ei saatu. Normaalisti ne lapset, jotka eivät nuku, lepäävät hetken ja pääsevät sitten lepohuoneesta pois tekemään muita asioita. Tänään se ei onnistu, koska olen yksin ja minun täytyy pitää kaikki lapset lepohuoneessa ennen kuin saamme toisen työntekijän ryhmääni. Hereillä olevat lapset ovat levottomia ja ihmettelevät, miksi he eivät pääse pois lepohuoneesta. Yritän rauhoitella turhautuneita lapsia, antaa heille sänkyyn leluja ja kirjoja ja pyydän heitä leikkimään hiljaa, että muut eivät herää. ”Miksi me ei päästä pois? Mä en halua olla täällä.” he kysyvät yhä uudestaan ja uudestaan. Kerron, että siksi, että siellä ei vielä ole ketään toista aikuista ottamassa teitä vastaan. Nieleskelen jälleen kyyneleitä.”
Päiväkodeissa työskentelevät eivät tarvitse enää yhtäkään korulausetta ilman konkretiaa. Varhaiskasvatus tarvitsee lisää resursseja. Pidetään me ehdokkaat huolta osaltamme, että todella lunastetaan ne lupaukset, joita äänestäjille annamme! Tämän ongelman ratkaisemiseen tarvitaan kaikkien puolueiden yhteistyötä. Kuntapäättäjillä on valtavan suuri vastuu pitää pienimpien kuntalaisten ja päiväkodissa työskentelevien puolta! 💚
Experiences from the Field of Early Childhood Education
Especially during election times, many parties highlight the importance of early childhood education with beautiful rhetoric. However, these words do not comfort those working in daycare, who live in a very different reality than decision-makers. I want to share with you a few snapshots from the everyday life in a daycare, which I have experienced in my previous profession as an early childhood education teacher:
”I am on the morning shift in a group of children under three years old and receive a notification that the next childcare worker coming to the group is sick. The third adult in the group will arrive in an hour. All the children are present, and I should start distributing breakfast to them. Two of the children in the group cannot walk yet. I only have two hands, which do not have time to comfort some of the children who are crying in the high chair. I also feel like crying and experience a great sense of inadequacy.”
“I am supervising the nap time of older children aged 3-5. We have one person absent from the group, and no substitute was found. Normally, the children who do not sleep at all rest for a while and then leave the nap room to do other activities. Today, that is not possible because I am alone and must keep all the children in the nap room until we get another worker in my group. The awake children are restless and wonder why they cannot leave the nap room. I try to calm the frustrated children, give them toys and books in bed, and ask them to play quietly so that others do not wake up. “Why can’t we leave? I don’t want to be here,” they ask repeatedly. I explain that it is because there is no other adult yet to receive them. I swallow my tears again.”
Those working in daycare no longer need any more rhetoric without concrete action. Early childhood education needs more resources. Let us, as candidates, ensure that we truly fulfill the promises we make to voters! Solving this problem requires cooperation from all parties. Municipal decision-makers have a huge responsibility to support the youngest residents and those working in daycare centers. 💚
